…..
It doesn’t really seem possible to me, but I was the last president of the world famous Hanna-Barbera Cartoons. I’d been a record producer, a radio station and cable television executive, but never a cartoon producer.
Ted Turner bought Hanna-Barbera in 1991. His entertainment president, my friend Scott Sassa, took a long shot and hired me in 1992 (Ted sold his company, and HB along with it, to Time-Warner in 1996.)
Running a cartoon studio was the greatest job a guy like me could have had. Huckleberry Hound and The Flintstones were two of my three favorite cartoons when I was a kid. And the studio had been hit-less since The Smurfs in 1983, so I had a free hand in shaping the company. We launched the innovative, back-to-the-future What A Cartoon! shorts series and found the talent that will populate the industry for the next 50 years.
And, against all odds, I’m still producing cartoons. Thanks Hanna-Barbera.
